  • Urban Legend Hike

I tell people that around here, snow is an urban legend as it is rare for us to get snow. I think it has been about 7 years since the last time we got snow.

As I am planning to go to the 2018 winter hang campout at Grayson State Park in VA, I thought this would be great two-fer. A chance to camp in the snow here and check my set up for the Grayson winter campout.

The wife decided to follow me in her car along with Sam the dog so he could run off some energy, She was not spending the night, just hiking to the shelter and back.

Got to the Hwy 101 trailhead about 3 PM. Saw one other car in the parking lot but never saw anyone else. It was 28 degrees. Lows were estimated to get down to around 9 degrees

While the trails are hikable. there are many sections that are frozen over, some rock solid, some not. There was one section where the wife was trying to walk along the side of the ice and lost her balance and slipped out onto a large sheet of ice. You could hear and see the ice cracking like something out of a movie just before the ice breaks and the person drops into the frozen waters below to never be seen again.

That did not happen and she was able to baby step her way back to firm ground.

Got out to the shelter and it appeared we were the first hikers to be there since the snowstorm as we did not see any foot prints on the side trail to the shelter. I did see two sets of footprints in the snow on the main trail. Sam and I hiked out here Thursday just before the snow storm hit.

Showed the wife where I normally set up and she headed back home.

Got my rig set up. I used a Warbonnet DL Black Bird Camo hammock, an Enlightened Equipment RevX 0 degree top quilt, a 7/8 UGQ 20 degree UQ ander that I placed a FL 0 degree Big Turtle UQ made. I then put a Warbonnet hammock sock over the whole mess. I then set up a 13 ft DIY 4 season tarp.

Started a small fire which was a pain to do as the wood was wet from the snow. The fire lasted long enough to heat up some water to make dinner. Had Mt House Chicken Teriyaki which was pretty good.

Thought I heard some voices on the main trail but when I walked out there I did not see anyone.

Ate a couple of candy bars and went to bed about 6 PM.

Started fairly warm except for having to get up 4 times to make some yellow snow. I really hate to get out of the hammock once I get comfortable.

At 10 PM the temps were down to 16 degrees.

At 6 AM the temps were down to 11 degrees.

About 7:30 AM I got up and broke down camp and hiked out.
